City Guide: 48 Hours in Barcelona, Spain

I went to Barcelona with my mom and sister and it was such a fun trip. We did a lot of exploring, relaxing, and eating really good food. It’s a beautiful city. Here are a few things that I recommend!

Catedral de Barcelona: Construction of the Cathedral of Barcelona commenced on May 1 1298 on the site of a Romanesque temple. The work was carried out in three stages over 150 years. We weren’t able to go inside because they were holding Christmas services but it was beautiful from the outside.

Montserrat Monastery: The mountain Montserrat has the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat at the top. We wanted to hike to the top of the mountain but we ended up taking the funicular up because it was so cold. We enjoyed walking around the path once we got to the top.

Casa Batlló: This is a gorgeous house designed by Antoni Gaudí. The design was influenced by nature and marine life. I recommend getting the audio guide so that you can learn more as you walk through the house. I took a lot of pictures but these are a few of my favorites.

The Sagrada Família: The Sagrada Família is a beautiful church designed by Gaudi. Unfortunately, Gaudi died before completion and he is buried in the crypt. The church is a work in process – it has been under construction for over 100 years. The stained glass is gorgeous!

Arc de Triomf: This arch was built on the occasion of the Exposición Universal de Barcelona – the universal exposition of 1888, which took place at the Parc de la Ciutadella.

Park Güell: Park Güell is a gorgeous park designed by Gaudi. I didn’t take too many pictures because it was really crowded but I got one of the view of the city.

The Poble Espanyol: The Poble Espanyol is a beautiful architecture museum in Barcelona. It has 117 buildings, streets and squares from all around Spain reproduced to scale and also has a Picasso museum inside.

Palau de la Musica Catalana: We saw a very talented singer at this beautiful concert hall!

Castell de Montjuïc: This is a fortress up on a mountain. The fortress has beautiful views of the sea and the city! We took a funicular up and enjoyed the views.

The Picasso Museum: If you like Picasso, you should definitely visit this museum. It has a lot of his early works. I recommend buying a ticket in advance so you don’t have to wait in the cold.

Boqueria: This is a great market that was right by our hotel. They have spices, dessert, and every kind of food imaginable.
