I used to wake up between 6:30 am and 7 am every morning, but recently I’ve been hitting snooze and sleeping later than I’d like to admit. I still make it to breakfast with a friend or my mom or to the gym, but I’d like to wake up earlier again. I’m a pro at walking to my phone, snoozing my alarm, mumbling “five more minutes,” and falling asleep for way over five minutes. Here are a few tips I’ll be using to wake up earlier (and stay awake).
- Go to bed early.
- Keep your alarm clock or phone on the other side of your room so you have to get up to turn it off.
- Keep a glass of cold water by your bed and drink it first thing in the morning.
- Know what you want to do with your time. Planning out something fun and rewarding to do with your time makes it much easier to crawl out of bed.
- Set your alarm close to when you actually have to wake up instead of setting it for earlier and hitting snooze.
- Open your curtains. Natural light helps cue that it is time to get up.
- Make your bed so you don’t go back to sleep.
- Keep track of when you wake up early and what you did with your time.
- Create a reward for waking up early such as going to the gym and getting a latte and muffin at your favorite bakery on the way to work or having a leisurely breakfast with a friend.
- Wake up at a similar time every weekday so you create a habit.
