The Best Career Podcasts to Listen to if You’re Starting a New Job

Confession: I only started listening to Serial, the podcast that had 40 million downloads as of December, because I couldn’t get through a day without someone mentioning it. Ever since then, it seems like the podcast world has exploded with everyone and their mother (yes, even my mom asked me to help her download her favorites) listening to podcasts. But with so many out there, it can be hard to choose the best. So we scoured the podcast library to bring you a list of career podcasts to listen to if you’re about to start a new job.

Plug in those headphones, download an episode, and start listening to these career podcasts:

1. Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!

Worried about making small talk with your coworkers on the first day? Get caught up with what’s going on in the world with this weekly NPR quiz show. It’s a fun way to learn about current events, and you can impress everyone by being the office’s in-person Skimm.

2. She Does

When you enter that first job you want to be at your most original, most inventive, and most innovative. She Does hosts conversations with creative women that are meant to inspire new leaders and build community. Have She Does be your “muse for the week” and let these notable, inspirational women get you ready to tackle any project.

3. StartUp

Is your new job a new business? If you’re looking to become an entrepreneur and get an idea off the ground, this is one of the best career podcasts for you. Hurry and listen to one CEO’s tale of getting a business started (the business is the network the show is hosted on!) because season two just started!

4. Reply All

No matter what job you find yourself in post-grad, having some knowledge of the web will make you stand out. Reply All, a show all about the internet will give you that background you’re looking for while also giving you entertaining stories that are perfect for your commute to work.

5. Seanwes Podcast

Have a question about, well, anything? Entrepreneurs Sean Wes and Ben Toalson have an answer. Whether you’re looking for tips on speaking in public (hello, first big presentation) or just want tips on how to keep improving, Wes and Toalson have an episode for you. And their relaxed banter will make you feel like you’re learning from two of your favorite friends. (Also, check out Wes’ awesome Instagram for some added inspiration.)

6. Adulthood Made Easy

Doesn’t the title just make you feel like a fairy podcast godmother is looking out for you? This show does just what it says: tackles those adult issues that are sometimes hard to navigate on your own. The first one? Negotiating your salary.

7. The Time Ferris Show

I was a bit skeptical when I saw this was one of the top business podcasts on iTunes, but after my friend raved about it, I could see why. These shows feature people who are killing it in their field and it gets to the bottom of why they’re so successful. So then you can take all their tips and tricks and go make a name for yourself.

8. Off the Charts

I love career podcasts as much as the next girl, but sometimes they’re super long, and ain’t nobody got time for that. What’s great about this show is it gives relevant, helpful advice while also being short and sweet. Learning how to keep motivated in just four minutes? Yes, please.

9. Raise Your Hand Say Yes

Looking for an awesome big sister to let you know you’re going to kick ass at your new job? Meet Tiffany Han. A business and branding coach, Han is here to help you take action in your office and in your life. Plus, she’s going to cheer you on along the way. In Han’s words, “You’ve SO got this.”

10. Call Your Girlfriend

The wonderful and brilliant Ann Friedman and Aminatou Sow cover just about everything in their appropriately titled podcast. While not career-centered, they do hit on sexism in the workplace, managing an adult budget, and how to avoid being the woman who does “office housework.” (And bonus, they also cover how to start your podcast, if you feel so inspired!)

Bonus: If you really want to be a cool podcast listener, you’ve got to have the right equipment. Consider ditching the classic iTunes Podcasts app and instead, downloading Overcast or Stitcher. These apps allow you to adjust speed, create playlists, and boost the volume for the perfect, personalized listening experience.

What are your favorite career podcasts?
