I am so excited that I will be attending Columbia Journalism School in the fall. I feel so fortunate to have found a career path that I truly love. It took some time and a few detours into government, law, and marketing, but my path all started here. I started a blog because I wanted a creative outlet and missed writing. I didn’t realize at the time that it would be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Writing posts helped me gain the confidence to write for other publications. I continued to work in marketing full-time and spent late nights and weekends writing articles for Elana Lyn and an expanding list of publications.
A few years later, I was invited to be on Two Inboxes, a Forbes podcast about people who balance a business and a full-time job. After the podcast aired, I applied to be a contributor to the Women@Forbes vertical that was launching later that year. I was accepted and started to write career profiles similar to the ones I had been writing for Elana Lyn since 2014. Writing for Women@Forbes has given me the opportunity to meet and interview women I’ve long admired like Sallie Krawcheck, Lisa Sugar, Kristen Bell, and Kendra Scott.
I originally started my blog and my Career Profile series because I felt incredibly lost in my career. I didn’t know what I wanted to do so I decided to learn about other people’s career paths and advice. It ends up the answer to my own ideal path was there all along. Their advice motivated me to get out of my own career comfort zone and inspired me to transition my journalism side hustle into a full-time job.
Columbia Journalism School was my #1 choice (and the only school I applied to) because of its history, location in the epicenter of the media world, the class options, and the caliber of the professors and students. It’s also an excellent school with a beautiful campus in the city and neighborhood I love. I can’t wait to start!
