5 Good Books: Volume 22

Here are a few books I read and enjoyed recently!

Pretty Girls

Pretty Girls: One of my best friends recommended this book but warned me that it is extremely disturbing. She was right, it is extremely graphic and there were parts where I actually felt nauseous reading it. The book is about two sisters who haven’t spoken since their teenage sister Julia disappeared twenty years earlier. Now Claire is the wife of a millionaire and Lydia is living paycheck to paycheck. They reconnect when Claire’s husband is murdered and start to uncover more about his past and their own.

The Proposal

The Proposal: If you’re looking for a light, fun, romance this book is a go-to. Nikole Paterson went to a Dodgers game with her boyfriend of a few months when he suddenly proposes…in front of everyone…on the jumbo screen. He’s angry when she says no and Carlos Ibarra and his sister help Nikole get home. Nikole and Carlos start dating but they both agree to keep it casual, but it ends up getting complicated. It’s a cute easy-read. Pack it in your beach bag.

The Perfect Mother

The Perfect Mother: A group of new moms start to get together twice a week. They decide to go out one night and one of the babies is kidnapped. The moms all try to help his mom, Winnie, find Midas. I had heard such good things about the book Kerry Washington is set to produce and star in the movie but I was a bit disappointed. I think it may have been better if it didn’t switch between the perspective of four mothers. It was a bit confusing and clunky. Hopefully it will translate better on-screen and can be a hit like Big Little Lies!

Playing With Matches

Playing With Matches: Sasha Goldberg just graduated from NYU and lands a job as a matchmaker for the dating service Bliss. Things are going well, until she finds her longtime boyfriend on Tinder and starts dating one of the men she set up with a Bliss client. The author, Hannah Orenstein, also went to NYU and became a matchmaker at an elite dating service at 21 so she knows what she’s writing about. It’s a fun and funny rom-com.

Bad Blood

Bad Blood: Bad Blood is by the journalist who exposed Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos. The book walks you through the rise and fall of Theranos. It reads like a novel and I couldn’t put it down. It is much more in-depth than all of the news coverage and the recent documentary. Now I’m looking forward to the movie with Jennifer Lawrence.
