How Petal It Forward is Spreading Happiness Two Bouquets at a Time

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I love flowers. They are beautiful and they make me so happy. Today the Society of American Florists (SAF) and florists across the country in 466 cities and all 50 states, DC and Canada are surprising people with two bouquets. They keep one and they give the other to a friend, family member, or coworker, or even a stranger to brighten someone else’s day. The initiative, aptly named Petal It Forward, is a real-world example of the scientific fact that flowers improve people’s moods and create or strengthen connections. A picture tells a thousand words and look at all the happy photos people have been sharing on social.

“Research shows that receiving flowers makes us happy and that giving flowers makes us even happier,” said Jennifer Sparks, SAF Vice President of Marketing. “The floral industry wants to share positivity and kindness toward others, and to give people the chance to do that for someone else,” she said.

I love watching the video from last year, especially because it was filmed right by where I had my very first job. At first, you see people not even stopping when someone they told them about the free flowers – but once people realized the flowers were a gift and they could give a bouquet to someone else, the smiles were contagious! People said it made their day, some people said they’d give the flowers to coworkers, the receptionist at the hospital they were heading to, or even a stranger on the street. As one woman said: “This is kindness.” Another woman said: “I’m going to give them to someone who looks like they could use a smile.” And a third person said: “I think it’s a great idea, everyone should do it.” I mean…thank goodness I’m wearing waterproof mascara today!

Now I’m off to find some tissues and flowers.
